Ice in the Desert
In June 2019, ownership of Seattle’s new National Hockey League (NHL) expansion team announced Palm Springs as the site for their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. The 10,000-seat arena that will serve as a home for the new minor league team will be built on Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians land in downtown Palm Springs and will be operated by OVG. Live Nation Entertainment has also signed on as a strategic partner and will help bring top artists and live events to the venue in Coachella Valley.
Blending In while standing out
The arena will be built largely underground in order to protect the sightlines to the mountain views in the area. The development will also include a pathway that connects the arena to the nearby Palm Springs Convention Center and downtown to promote walking and visiting the downtown businesses. Construction will begin in early 2020 with an opening scheduled in-line with the 2021 grand re-opening of the Seattle Center Arena and the NHL/AHL seasons.
